Module 0.1 The Scientific Attitude, Critical Thinking, and Developing Arguments
Psychology is a science
The science of behavior and mental processes.
The three parts of the scientific attitude
Curiosity, skepticism, and humility applied to testing ideas.
Critical thinking
Judging claims by checking assumptions, sources, bias, evidence, and conclusions.
1How to study this lesson
AReading plan
- This short lesson sets up the whole course. Learn the three parts of the scientific attitude well enough to spot them in a scenario, and practice the claim–evidence–reasoning pattern: the AP free-response section asks you to argue with research, not opinion.
2Psychology is a science心理學是一門科學
AWhat makes a field scientific
- Psychology scientifically studies what people do (behavior) and what goes on in their minds (mental processes). It counts as a science because of how it answers questions, not because of what topic it studies.
- Claims are tested with careful observation and measurement.
- Ideas must make predictions that could turn out wrong.
- Results are shared so other researchers can check them.
- Some questions cannot be tested at all, such as what happens after death. Science stays silent on these. Other claims sound strange but can be tested, for example, whether a person can read minds. For testable claims, the scientific approach says: set up a fair test and let the evidence decide.
3The three parts of the scientific attitude
ACuriosity, skepticism, humility
Three parts of the scientific attitude
| Element要素 | What it means意思 | Question it asks會問的問題 |
|---|---|---|
| Curiosity好奇 | A drive to explore and understand想探索、想理解的動力 | Why does this happen? |
| Skepticism懷疑 | Asking for evidence before accepting a claim接受主張前先要證據 | Does it really work? What's the proof? |
| Humility謙虛 | Accepting that you may be wrong接受自己可能是錯的 | What if my idea doesn't fit the data? |
- Together these three habits keep science self-correcting. Ideas that pass repeated tests stay; ideas that fail are dropped, no matter how popular they were.
Is a skeptic someone who refuses to believe anything?
No. A skeptic asks for evidence before accepting a claim, and accepts it when the evidence is good. Refusing everything no matter the evidence is cynicism, not skepticism.
4Critical thinking
AFive questions a critical thinker asks
- Critical thinking means not accepting a claim automatically. When you read a news story, a social media post, or a study, check:
- Assumptions: what does the claim take for granted?
- Source: who says this, and what do they gain from it?
- Hidden bias: is anything being left out or slanted?
- Evidence: is it based on one story or on systematic data?
- Conclusion: does the evidence really support it, or are there other explanations?
Saying "I feel like it's true" is not evidence. A belief can be held strongly and still be wrong. Critical thinkers stay open to changing their minds when better evidence appears.「我覺得是這樣」不是證據。
BBuilding an argument from evidence
- On the AP exam you often need to support a claim with scientifically derived evidence. A simple structure:
- Claim: state your position in one sentence.
- Evidence: cite a study or research finding, not a personal story.
- Reasoning: explain how the evidence supports the claim.
5Common misconceptions
AMyth or fact?
Is psychology just common sense dressed up in big words?
No. Psychology tests ideas with data, and many popular beliefs fail those tests. When findings agree with common sense, research tells us how strong the effect is and when it holds.
Does being open-minded mean accepting every idea?
No. Being open-minded means being willing to consider an idea, then judging it by the evidence.
