Each section of the book is told by one of seven students. Peter, a class clown, expects to fool the rookie teacher by leaving class to goof around, but Mr. Terupt notices and handles it with a quiet joke instead of yelling. Jessica, who just moved from California with her mother, is nervous on her first day until Mr. Terupt says he is new too. Luke, the top student, loves the first math project, finding words whose letters add up to exactly one dollar. Alexia, who wears flashy clothes, befriends Jessica and tells her lies about Danielle, starting a "girl war." Jeffrey says school is pointless and hopes the teacher will not figure him out. Danielle, who lives on a farm, is hurt because Alexia keeps dropping her as a friend and making jokes about her weight; her grandmother prays with her. The book uses multiple narrators. Each student has a distinct voice: Jessica writes her sections like acts and scenes in a play, Luke tags words worth a dollar, Alexia overuses the word "like," and Danielle ends some sections with prayers.
