What happens
Not identifying as male or female. Sasha uses this word for themself.
A crime motivated by bias against a group, such as a race, religion, or gender identity. It can carry a longer sentence.
  • Juvenile court: A court for people under 18 that focuses on rehabilitation. Cases moved to adult court can bring much heavier punishment.

注意
Sections in this lesson: Monday, November 4, 2013; Oakland, California Before you read:
  • Think about a route you travel every day. Who else rides it, and how much do you know about them?
  • Have you ever wished you could stop something before it happened?
Reading focus: Notice how the author describes Oakland as one city with very different neighborhoods.
At a glance:
  • On a November afternoon in 2013, Sasha, a high school senior, falls asleep on the 57 bus on the way home.
  • Richard, a sixteen-year-old, holds a lighter to the edge of Sasha's skirt, and it catches fire.
  • The author then describes Oakland: proud of its diversity, but sharply divided between wealthy and poor neighborhoods.
The book opens on an ordinary ride home from school, written in the present tense. Sasha, a senior at a small private high school who identifies as agender, dozes off near the back of the 57 bus. A few feet away, Richard, a junior at Oakland High School, is joking around with two friends. He touches a lighter to Sasha's skirt. The author freezes the moment and tells us what will follow: Sasha will spend weeks in a hospital being treated for serious burns, and Richard will be arrested, charged as an adult with a hate crime clause, and face a possible life sentence. Then the book steps back to show the city. Oakland is one of the most diverse cities in the United States and likes to see itself as open-minded, but it also has deep inequality: the hills are wealthier and safer, while East Oakland, where Richard lives, has most of the city's violence. The 57 bus runs between these worlds, and the two teenagers shared it for only about eight minutes a day.

  • Oakland, California: a city of about 400,000 people across the bay from San Francisco. No single ethnic group is a majority.
  • A divided city: in 2013, Oakland was among the U.S. cities with the biggest gap between rich and poor, and with one of the highest rates of violent crime.
  • Charged as an adult: in some U.S. states, a teenager's case can be moved from juvenile court to adult court, where punishments are much heavier. Part 3 explains how this works.
4Author's craft
Slater opens with a scene in the present tense and then speaks directly to the reader, wishing someone could still stop what is about to happen. Because she tells us the outcome right away, the book is not a mystery about who did it. The real questions become why it happened and what should happen next. Her description of the bus route, running from the hills down to the flatlands, works like a map of the city's divisions.
5Think about it想一想
Why do you think the author tells us the result of the fire in the very first section?
It removes suspense about what happened, so readers focus on the two people, the causes, and the consequences. It also makes readers feel the urge to stop it, which pulls them into the story.
How does the route of the 57 bus connect to the idea of a divided city?57
The route passes through wealthy hill neighborhoods and poorer flatland neighborhoods. Sasha and Richard come from different parts of the city, and the bus is one of the few places where their lives overlap.
