AAbout the book
The 57 Bus (2017) by Dashka Slater is narrative nonfiction: a true story told with the tools of a novel, such as scenes, dialogue, and changing points of view. It follows two teenagers in Oakland, California, whose lives crossed on a city bus on November 4, 2013, and traces what happened to both of them afterward. The book won the Stonewall Book Award and the California Book Award.《The 57 Bus》(2017)是達施卡·斯萊特(Dashka Slater)的敘事型非小說:用小說的手法(場景、對話、不同人物的觀點)來寫一個真實事件。
Structure: the book has four parts, called Sasha, Richard, The Fire, and Justice. Each part is made of many very short sections. Most are written like news reporting, but some are poems, lists, online chats, letters, or official documents. These notes group several sections into one lesson and name the sections each lesson covers, because page numbers differ between editions.
BQuestions to keep in mind
- Can one act, even a very harmful one, tell us who a person really is?
- When a teenager seriously hurts someone, what should society do: punish, protect the public, help the teen change, or all three?
- How do the words we use for people, such as names, pronouns, and labels, shape the way we see them?
CHow to read this book
- Everyone in the book is a real person. The author identifies young people by first name only, and these notes do the same.
- Sasha uses the pronoun they for one person, for example "Sasha said they were tired." In the Chinese notes, we usually just repeat Sasha's name.
- The book deals with a serious crime, injuries, race, gender identity, and the justice system. The author reports facts carefully and shows several sides of each debate. These notes do the same and leave the conclusions to you.
- Sasha 用 they 指稱自己一個人,例如 "Sasha said they were tired."(Sasha 說他們很累)。
