Crash (1996) by Jerry Spinelli is a realistic novel about John "Crash" Coogan, a seventh-grade football star in a small Pennsylvania town who has always pushed his way through life. Jerry Spinelli was born in 1941 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and studied at Gettysburg College. As a boy he played many sports, including football and track, and he dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player before he turned to writing. His books often describe ordinary kids in small towns and how people treat those who are different. Spinelli won the Newbery Medal in 1991 for Maniac Magee and a Newbery Honor in 1998 for Wringer.
