AAbout the book
The Giver (1993) by Lois Lowry is a dystopian novel: a story about a society that seems perfect but hides a serious cost. It won the Newbery Medal in 1994 and is the first book in The Giver Quartet.《The Giver》(1993)是洛伊絲·勞里(Lois Lowry)的反烏托邦小說,描寫一個看似完美、卻藏著沉重代價的社會。
Point of view: the story is told in the third person, but readers only see what Jonas sees and thinks. Setting: a small, carefully planned community where almost every part of life follows rules. The book has 23 chapters; these notes refer to chapters, not page numbers, because editions differ.
BQuestions to keep in mind
- Is a world with no pain worth giving up choice?
- Why do memories matter, even painful ones?
- What do the community's polite words hide?
