Katniss Everdeen wakes early on the day of the reaping, the yearly drawing of names for the Hunger Games. Her father died in a mine explosion five years ago, so she slips under the fence of District 12 to hunt with her bow. Hunting is against the law, and so is the private trading she does at the Hob, the district's black market, but the Peacekeepers like fresh meat too much to stop her. In the woods she meets Gale, her hunting partner, who jokes about running away. They know they cannot leave their families. Katniss explains the cruel system behind the reaping. Every child aged twelve to eighteen must enter the drawing, and poor families can add extra entries in exchange for tesserae, a small ration of grain and oil. Because of this, Katniss's name is in the drawing twenty times and Gale's forty-two times, while richer children like Madge, the mayor's daughter, have far fewer entries. Attendance at the reaping is mandatory. In the town square, the mayor repeats the official history: after a failed uprising against the Capitol, the districts must send two tributes each year to fight to the death in an arena on live television. Effie Trinket, the cheerful escort from the Capitol, draws the girl's name. It is not Katniss. The novel is told in the first person and the present tense. We see everything through Katniss's eyes as it happens, so we never know more than she does.
