Number the Stars (1989) by Lois Lowry is a historical novel set in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1943, during the German occupation in World War II. It tells the story of how ordinary Danes helped their Jewish neighbors escape to safety. CHistorical background歷史背景
- Germany invaded and occupied Denmark in April 1940. Denmark was small and had a small army, so it surrendered almost at once.
- At first the occupation was less harsh than in other countries, but by 1943 Danish resistance grew and the Germans took tighter control.
- In autumn 1943 the Nazis planned to arrest Denmark's Jews. A warning leaked out, and Danes helped about 7,000 Jewish people cross the sea to neutral Sweden in a few weeks.

Lois Lowry was born in Hawaii in 1937 and grew up in New York, Pennsylvania, and Japan. She has written more than thirty books for young readers. She based this novel on the childhood memories of a Danish friend who grew up in Copenhagen during the occupation.洛伊絲·勞里 1937 年生於夏威夷，在紐約、賓州和日本長大，寫過三十多本青少年讀物。這本小說的靈感來自一位丹麥朋友的童年回憶：她在占領時期的哥本哈根長大。
